Magis Moment: October 2025

A Message from the Vice President of University Advancement

In 2021, two generous individuals created the Dr. Constance Mui, Ph.D., and Rev. David A. Boileau, Ph.D. Endowment in Philosophy to support teaching, research, and scholarships in the Department of Philosophy. In the 2024-2025 academic year, this entirely donor-funded endowment strengthened education in philosophy and theology by allowing Dr. Mark Gossiaux to pursue research in Leuven, Belgium, at the Institute of Philosophy at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. It also provided funding for Dr. Everett Fulmer to travel to the Eastern Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association, where he presented on Aristotle’s logic with his co-author Cole Green. Cole is a Loyola alumnus who is now a graduate student at Georgia State University. It is worth noting that it is extremely unusual for an undergraduate to present at the American Philosophical Association. This is a singular honor made possible through the generosity of our donors and is a testament to the strength of the educational offerings at Loyola.

Funding from the endowment also supported conference travel for Dr. Joel MacClellan, the purchase of computer equipment for use on campus, and expenses incurred by our student Ethics Bowl team, which competed in the National Bioethics Bowl championships in Salt Lake City this past spring. The team finished in the top 10 at the competition!

The individuals who helped make all of this possible did so because of the profound impact Dr. Mui and Rev. Boileau had on the lives of countless students, including me, through the study of philosophy. Through this endowment, their legacy and their impact continue, increasing the number of lives touched in some way by their commitment to education. It is beautiful to think the efforts we make today, the kindness that we show, the sacrifices that we make, can live on for years or even generations in the way that it has because of Dr. Mui and Rev. Boileau and because of the donors who have made a legacy in their honor.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Hotard
