Nursing MSN: Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

The master of science in nursing – psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program at Loyola University New Orleans prepares students to care for individuals through the lifespan.

With an emphasis on patient-centered care, Loyola's curriculum promotes evidence-based practice interventions that emphasize equitable, culturally-responsive mental healthcare. Graduates of Loyola's MSN Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program will be prepared to provide advanced level psychiatric and mental health services to patients across the lifespan, including the following areas of practice:

  • Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions.
  • Psychopharmacology and therapeutic interventions.

The MSN psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) program is designed to be completed in seven semesters with continuous year-round enrollment. Students in Loyola’s MSN-PMHNP program complete hybrid coursework including online asynchronous and synchronous teaching methods combined with annual on-campus intensives and clinical practicums totaling 750 supervised clinical hours in direct patient care. This hybrid method of curriculum delivery allows students to attend class from the convenience of their home, while also ensuring the development of community for each cohort.  Graduates of the MSN psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program are eligible to take the national certification examination administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) of the American Nurses Association or by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB).
