Political science student named Tavis Smiley Youth Leader
Kristen Lee, a political science sophomore, was selected and honored as a 2009 Tavis Smiley Youth Leader of the Decade. The Tavis Smiley Foundation provides leadership training to youth across America, helping to promote a better quality of life for themselves and their communities.

Students receive proclamations from New Orleans City Council
The New Orleans City Council awarded proclamations to several political science students at Loyola University New Orleans for their work on a policy brief entitled "Customer Service in New Orleans, Louisiana."
Maroon staffers win Press Club Awards
Loyola University New Orleans students took home numerous honors at the 51st annual Press Club of New Orleans awards competition on July 18. Ramon Antonio Vargas was nominated for articles he wrote in 2008 for Loyola's student newspaper, The Maroon, and for The Times-Picayune.

Four journalism students and one 2009 Loyola University New Orleans graduate were nominated for the 51st Annual Press Club of New Orleans Journalism Awards competition. Work they completed last year will compete with that of professional journalists in the New Orleans area.

Counseling students reorganize Sigma Chi Iota honor society
Students in the graduate program in Counseling recently resurrected Loyola’s chapter of Sigma Chi Iota, the international honor society for professional counselors, counselor educators, and students. The organization has been dormant at Loyola University New Orleans since 2005.
Sociology students honored with departmental awards
Several graduates of the Department of Sociology were honored at the College of Social Sciences annual awards ceremony May 2009. Awards bestowed included the Social Justice Scholarship Award, the Jerroll M. Seaman "Spirit of Gemeinschaft" Award, and the Dux Sociologicus Award.
