Student Opportunities

Summer Program in the Bahamas

Students spend four weeks in Nassau, Bahamas learning about the rich histories and cultures of the region. Students earn academic credit in two courses:

SOCI X150 Encountering the Caribbean. This Advanced Common Curriculum social science course provides an interdisciplinatry introduction to the study of the Caribbean region with a focus on the Bahamas.

SOCI A337 Ethnographic Methods-Field Work in the Bahamas. This course combines reading and class discussion with hands-on observations in Nassua sites and communities. The course includes several guest speakers and a weekend stay on Andros Island. Contact Dr. Angel Adams Parham (504) 865-3581, aaparham@loyno.edu for information.

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD)

Membership in Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the International Sociological Honor Society, is open to students who are at least juniors, have taken four or more Sociology courses, and have maintained an average of B or better. If you meet these criteria and wish to join, contact Dr. Anthony Ladd (aladd@loyno.edu) for more information.

Research and Practical Experience

Supervised research and practical experience are essential to completing a sociology degree. Opportunities to conduct research for community organizations and faculty, as well as service learning projects, are incorporated into selected courses.

Internships

Internships have been available to students in recent years at the following community organizations or businesses: Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater New Orleans; Common Ground, Fair Housing Action Center, FEMA, Hispanic Apostolate, Kingsley House, Methodist Home for Children, Muscular Dystrophy Association, nola.com, ViaLink, and placement as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA).
