Loyola University Sociology Student Organization (LUSSO)

The Loyola University Sociology Student Organization (LUSSO) is a student organization that works toward improving social justice issues at Loyola and in the New Orleans Community. Although Sociology is the focused major of this organization, students from all majors are welcome to participate. One of LUSSO's goals is to help bridge the gap between sociology in the classroom and sociology in the real world. Students who participate will hopefully have a better understanding of what they can do with a sociology degree, and will inspire its students to use their community through various services. Contact the organization’s faculty adviser, Dr. Warren Waren, wwaren@loyno.edu or LUSSO’s current President Max Ciolino, msciolin@loyno.edu, for more information.

Social Justice Scholars (SJS)

The Social Justice Scholarship Program began in 1994 as an avenue through which Loyola University New Orleans could actualize its Jesuit tradition of academic excellence and the pursuit of social justice. Social Justice Scholarships are awarded to students who exhibit a high level of academic promise, as well as a demonstrated commitment to community service and activism. Once in the SJS program, students are required to major or minor in sociology, where they critically analyze social problems and solutions. This classroom study informs the work they are doing in community setting, completing 45 hours of service each semester. In 2003, Ms. Marjorie Fruge endowed a scholarship at Loyola to be used to support social justice efforts and the Social Justice Scholars. Her donation allows a modest amount of money to be added to the scholarships of existing Social Justice Scholars and to extend the program to current Loyola students. This award is merit-based and is used to honor the consistent work of SJS students. http://www.loyno.edu/~sjs/
