Recent Scholarly Activities

Highlights of recent scholarly activity by the sociology faculty include:

George Capowich published two articles in 2003: "The Effects of Neighborhood Ecology on Burglary Victimization," Criminal Justice and Behavior 30; and "Examining the Links Between Strain, Types of Anger, and Crime: An Assessment of General Strain Theory" (co-authored with Paul Mazerolle and Alex Piquero), Youth and Society 35.

Dr. Capowich and Marcus Mahmood Kondkar presented their work on rebuilding New Orleans neighborhoods after Hurricane Katrina: "Rebuilding New Orleans Neighborhoods after Hurrican Katrina: Toward a Theory of Social Structure and Cultural Creativity," at the annual meeting of the Southern Sociological Society in New Orleans in November, 2006, which was later published (2007) by Rowman & Littlefield in The Sociology of Katrina: Perspectives on a Modern Catastrophe.

Marcus Mahmood Kondkar published a chapter in Socio-legal Research Methods entitled "Researching Law and Violence Between Intimate Partners," (Hart Publishing, 2007). Dr. Kondkar's article, "Collateral Consequences of the Prison-Industrial Complex," appears in Social Justice (Vol. 31, Nos. 1-2, 2004). Dr. Kondkar has also incorporated four student research assistants in his current research, an extensive study of campus dating violence and sexual assault.

Anthony Ladd has published a number of important findings from his work on the specific effects of the disaster on student populations in Louisiana and Mississippi, including "Students Evacuation Experiences and Impacts Surrounding Hurricane Katrina: A Survey of Three New Orleans Universities," (co-authored with John Marszalek, Dennis A. Gill, Angela Maggard, and Dennis McSeveney), published by the Social Science Research Center at Mississippi State University. Presentations include "Louisiana, They're Trying to Wash Us Away: Humanist Reflections on the Socio-Environmental Impacts of Hurricane Katrina," at the Association of Humanist Sociology Meetings in October, 2005.

Angel Adams Parham's article, "Race, Memory, and Family History " is being published in a forthcoming issue of Social Identities (January 2008). Dr. Parham also presented her work, "Louisiana Creoles in Diaspora: Before and After Katrina," at the annual meeting of the Southern Sociological Society in New Orleans, March, 2006.. She is currently working with students on her study of descendants of St. Domingue/Haiti in Louisiana, "Legacies of St. Domingue/Haiti in Louisiana: Race, Memory and Family History.".

Lydia Voigt presented "The Media's Portrayal of Crime versus the Reality of Crime in Post Katrina New Orleans," (co-authoer William E. Thornton) at the Southern Sociological Society meeting in New Orleans in March, 2006. Dr. Voigt also published her study of women's vulnerability to rape and sexual assault during disasters, "Disaster Rape: Vulnerability of Women to Sexual Assaults during Hurricane Katrina," (co-authored with William E. Thornton) in Journal of Public Management & Social Policy, 2007. She is currently working on a several books, including a book (with co-author Dee Harper) on "The History of Homicide in New Orleans" and a book for faculty and administration, "Measuring the Quality of Learning in Higher Education."
