The Stanislaw Makielski Prize
About Stanislaw Makielski
Professor Emeritus S. J. Makielski, Jr. retired from the department in 1995 but still is on call to offer advice and assistance in matters of curriculum and planning. He was with the department from 1971 to his retirement and specialized in the areas of urban government, political leadership, American political institutions; Dr. Makielski was an early winner of Dux Academicus award, given yearly to an outstanding faculty member at Loyola. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1965.
In the Autumn of 2004, the Eta Epsilon Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha at Loyola University New Orleans decided to fund the Stanislaw Makielski Prize.
Purpose
The prize provides an incentive to political science students to engage in more thorough and in-depth topic research for their papers. This will, in turn, help foster a critical discussion on important political issues among students. The main objective is to encourage submission of well researched, firmly supported, and clearly organized essays in any field of political science; the secondary objectives are to identify prospective members, encourage wider student participation, and to promote the chapter within and without Loyola's campus.
Rules and Guidelines
The Stanislaw Makielski Prize will be awarded to three papers written by students enrolled in a political science course during each academic year, however exceptional papers written during the previous semester will be considered. The papers should be submitted to Ms. Gayle Mumfrey, the department's administrative assistant, via hard copy and also by electronic copy sent to mumfrey@loyno.edu. (Please note "Pi Sig Journal" in the subject line of the e-mail) Look for submission deadlines for the 2008 edition to be announced in the Fall Semester. The contest will be announced in political science classes, meetings, promoted on Pi Sigma Alpha's bulletin board, the website, and throughout campus using fliers. A panel consisting of faculty and Pi Sigma Alpha members will judge all submissions and recommend three of them for the monetary awards as well as any that deserve honorable mention. The monetary awards are $100, $75, $50 for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize respectively. The winners of the Stanislaw Makielski Prize will automatically be published in Eta Epsilon chapter's Journal of Political Science.
