Student Organizations and Teams

Professional Organizations:

  • Advertising Club - Open to any Loyola student with an interest in advertising. Designed to provide a better understanding of advertising as a career option, to help students network with advertising professionals, and to give members experience doing advertising campaigns. Programs include speakers, internships, socials, and attendance at professional meetings of local and national advertising professionals.

  • Kappa Tau Alpha is the national honor society in journalism and mass communication. Membership is earned by excellence in academic work. Only juniors and seniors who rank in the top 10 percent of their classes and graduate students of superior achievement are considered for membership. Loyola’s School of Mass Communication is one of only 93 schools and departments of journalism and mass communications in the U.S. to host a chapter of the society. It was granted its charter in 1990 based on the quality of the student body, the scholarly productivity and qualifications of the faculty, the adequacy of the facilities, the nature of the curriculum, and the level of campus administrative support.

  • Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) - Open to students interested in public relations and integrated communications. Major services include professional development programs, career networking, scholarship competitions, access to PRSA-New Orleans Job Bank, opportunity to network with public relations practitioners and to participate in a national case study competition.

  • Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Open to print, broadcast, photo, and Web journalists. The oldest, biggest, and most inclusive national organization, fosters responsible journalism, supports press freedom, and encourages students via scholarships, networking, and internship opportunities and job banks. Benefits also include the monthly journal, national and regional conventions, professional development workshops, socials and other activities.

  • The Maroon - Weekly newspaper. Award-winning college newspaper with opportunities for students interested in journalism, graphic design, photojournalism, and ad sales.

  • The Wolf - Loyola student yearbook with opportunity to gain experience in writing, photography, editing, ad sales, and graphic design. Open to all Loyola students.

Competition Teams:

  • Advertising Team - competes each spring in the National Student Advertising Competition sponsored by the American Advertising Federation. Selected students work on a real-world campaign for a national company. Past sponsors have included Toyota, Pizza Hut, Hallmark, VISA, and other nationally recognizable companies. As part of the project, students develop a comprehensive campaign for the client including research, creative ideas, and media recommendations. In addition to preparing a professional plans book, they travel to compete at the District competition in April. Our district includes Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, and Tennessee. In the past 10 years, Loyola University New Orleans has won the District competition on the average every other year.

  • PRSSA Bateman Team - competes each spring in the premier Public Relations Competition in the country. Five students are carefully selected to create and implement a campaign for a national company. Past sponsors have included Nutella, Contiki Travel, VISA, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Over the past eight years, the Loyola University New Orleans team has placed in the finals every year and won the national championship three times.

Centers in the School:

  • Center for Environmental Communication - Blend your interests in communications with the environment in an exciting way. Programs/projects include academic classes, enhancing communications among environmental stakeholders, tropical communications (especially in the West Indies and Belize), field trips, working on publications that facilitate environmental progress, and the like.

  • Shawn M. Donnelley Center for Nonprofit Communications - A graphics computer lab, housed in CM 331, established to allow students to work on projects/integrated communications for nonprofit clients. Volunteers are welcome.
