On Thursday March 14, 2013, interested students will be able to tour the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, Louisiana. The transportation will be provided by Louisiana Coaches Trailways. Professors, instructors, and students will depart from Loyola at 6:00am in order to arrive at the penetentiary at 10:00am. This will be an all day event.
At the beginning of the spring semester, the professors in the Department of Criminal Justice will provide sign-up sheets for those who want to participate. There will be a nominal fee of $15.00 per person to cover transportation and a meal at the facility. On February 22, 2013 at 6.30pm, Loyola University Film Buffs Institute will be screening a documentary on folklore describing how legendary bluesman, Huddie "Lead Belly" Ledbetter, sang his way out of prison, twice.
