Graduate Program of Study in Counseling
Becoming a School Counselor

Counselor in Elementary Schools

Provisional Counselor in Elementary Schools -- (Authorization valid for five years and not renewable)

The applicant must hold a valid Louisiana Elementary Certificate and must have completed three years of successful experience at the elementary level or

  • LPC licensure
  • At least one Practicum or Internship in school setting.

The applicant must hold a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from a regionally accredited institution or a master's degree with the equivalent hours and courses required for a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling. The graduate training must include a total of 21 semester hours of professional courses distributed so that at least one course will be taken in each of the seven basic areas listed below except that students who have taken a course in Principles and Administration of Guidance at the undergraduate level will not be held accountable for it at the graduate level:

  3. Counseling Theory and Practice EDGR 830 Counseling Theories
  4. Orientation to the World of Work EDGR 841 Vocational Counseling
  5. Group Processes in the Elementary School EDGR 840 Group Counseling
  6. Elementary Guidance Practicum EDGR 865 Practicum
  7. Child Growth and Development EDGR 722 Advanced Child Psychology or EDGR 725 Developmental psychology

Permanent Endorsement: Counselor in Elementary Schools

A permanent endorsement may be added when nine semester hours of graduate courses are completed from the classifications outlined in Bulletin 996 - Louisiana State Department of Education.

Counselor in Secondary Schools

Provisional Counselor in Secondary Schools -- (Authorization valid for five years and not renewable)

The applicant must hold a valid Louisiana Secondary Certificate and must have completed three years of successful experience at the secondary level or two years of successful experience at the secondary level and one year of accumulated occupational experience or

  • LPC licensure
  • At least one Practicum or Internship in school setting.

The applicant must hold a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from a regionally accredited institution or a master's degree with the equivalent hours and courses required for a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling. The graduate training must include a total of 21 semester hours of professional courses distributed so that at least one course will be taken in each of the seven basic areas listed below except that students who have taken a course in Principles and Administration of Guidance at the undergraduate level will not be held accountable for it at the graduate level:

Requests for certification must be accompanied by a recommendation from the institution in which the individual has completed the above requirements if the master's degree held is not in Guidance and/or Counseling.

Permanent Endorsement: Counselor in Secondary Schools

A permanent endorsement may be added when nine semester hours of graduate courses are completed from classifications listed in the Professional Counselor in Elementary Schools section of Bulletin 996 of the Louisiana State Department of Education.

Counselor K-12 in the School Setting

An applicant who holds a valid Louisiana teaching certificate and meets the following requirements may be issued an endorsement for counselor in the school setting.

The applicant must hold a master's degree in school counseling from a regionally accredited institution or a master's degree with the equivalent hours and courses required for a master's degree in school counseling. The graduate training must include a total of 24 semester hours of professional courses distributed so that at least one course will be taken in each of the basic areas listed below:

  7. Social and Cultural Foundations in Counseling EDGR 842 Multicultural Counseling
  8. Supervised Practicum in a School Setting EDGR 865 Practicum
